29 Weeks
How Far Along: 29 Weeks
Baby's Size: Acorn Squash Average size: 15.2-16.7 inches, 2.5-3.8 lbs (Another source says baby weighs almost 3 lbs and is approximately 17 inches head to toe.)
Total Weight Gain:
Home scale: 1.4 lbs this week bringing me to 15.2 lbs total
Doctor’s scale: 18 lbs at our 28 week appointment on January 24th
Weight gained with Grant at this point: 24 lbs
Maternity Clothes: Yes... almost all the time now. I will say my work polos do still fit though and did throughout my pregnancy with Grant so we will see if that continues with this one. I did have to retire one pair of workout/pj pants. The elastic was just getting too tight and uncomfortable on my waist/belly.
Baby's Movement: Having a lot of tickle-like smaller movements down low and big movements higher up. Most of the movement is still isolated mainly to my middle and right side.
Food Cravings: I am just starving... all the time. I have been trying to take it easy and only eat what I need and choose more nutritious options. A must is at least one sweet treat a day though!
Food Aversions: Mushrooms. I love mushrooms... mainly fresh but I am not a fan lately.
Sleep: Sleep is my friend. I could always use more but I have actually been feeling pretty good on the fatigue end of things... or lack there of! I also had a couple nights with one potty break.
Symptoms: Braxton Hicks seem to have calmed down this week (even though I didn't take it easy like I was supposed to... naughty!) I have had more energry. Dry knees!?! I know skin changes are common and I have noticed my face is more sensitive to my face lotion I have been using for years but my knees just can't seem to get enough lotion! I have had a little less discomfort in my ribs this week as well so that is great. Increased frequency in urination. She has been using my bladder as a punching bag at times and I can tell a difference in the number of trips to the bathroom during the day.
Best Moment(s) This Week: We made major progress on organzation this week. Click here to view some of our weekend projects. Also, her bedroom is officially painted. We'll see what kind of progress we can make on that!
What I Miss: A normal belly button. Mine is so lopsided and weird. Not protruding but not quite flush yet. Not the most flattering picture below. The scar on the left is my not so pretty appendectomy scar from when it ruptured 3 years ago.
What I Am Looking Forward To: My massage this weekend! And working on the nursery.
What's Different This Time: This week with Grant I was very tired and having tons of discomfort in my rib area... with her not so much this week! We'll see what next week brings!

Nesting and Organization
We started with the pantry. It was a relatively easy fix but difficult to see from the picture. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a before picture. Previously the shelves pictured were solid pieces and not u-shaped. They are over 2 feet deep and you could never reach anything in the back and had to keep items pulled to the front... a major waste of space. Not anymore! As Matt said... we should have done that years ago.
And on to the next, bigger project. We have wanted to do something different with our toy room/office for awhile now. With the coming addition, I felt the need for some major organization. Thank you Pinterest!
This is the boring mess before... |
After a coat of paint and the addition of our new shelves... |
The final product |
I have not forgotten about baby's room trust me. We decided to have someone paint it for us and he will be here this week so we should be able to pull everything together quickly after that. There will be pictures to come of that later.

28 Weeks
How Far Along: 28 Weeks, 1 Day
Baby's Size: Eggplant Average size: 13.6-14.8 inches, 1.5-2.2 lbs (Another source says baby weighs 2.5 lbs and is approximately 16 inches head to toe.)
Immune system is preparing for the outside world...
Total Weight Gain:
Home scale: 0.8 lbs this week bringing me to 13.8 lbs total (A much better week compared to my 2.5-3 lb weeks the last couple!)
Doctor’s scale: 18 lbs at our 28 week appointment yesterday so as you can see there is about a 4 lb difference between my scale and the docs. I consistently weight myself once a week on the same day first thing in the morning. Not really a big deal and I still like my numbers better :)
Weight gained with Grant at this point: 20.8 lbs
Maternity Clothes: Of course... pants always and very often maternity shirts as well.
Baby's Movement: Boy does she ever!
Food Cravings: Burgers, burgers and more burgers! Usually Culver's... healthy I know! Oranges... I seriously eat one everyday and hey it helps with iron absorption which I need. A bowl of cereal nearly every night before bed. Spinach and pretty much anything that anyone talks about food-wise I immediately want some.
Food Aversions: None that I can think of...
Sleep: Still sleeping great with no nightly potty breaks...
Symptoms: Discomfort under my ribs aka achey, burning sensation. It doesn't matter the position... this little girl is riding high like her brother. I have been trying to eat smaller meals which helps a little. I have also been having alot of Braxton Hicks (as in over 30 yesterday in 6 hours and sometimes as many as 8 in an hour). I discussed this with Dr. Dennis because it seems to be way more than I had with Grant and is still so early. She ended up doing a quick internal check and had a hard time telling if I was dilated or not. She said the outer part of my cervix felt like it was and she couldn't tell about the upper/inner portion. She had to use an instrument to get a better look and she said everything appears normal and my cervix is still nice and long. She advised that maybe I take it easy over the next week or so and see if I can get them to calm down a little.
Best Moment(s) This Week: A night away with my hubby and snowboarding. Yes, I survived... did great and didn't fall a single time.
What I Miss: Rolling over in bed without it being a big production.
What I Am Looking Forward To: Holy cow only 12 weeks! Had a moment of panic this week. We have some projects in the works and I want them done now! It seems like we are running out of time. We have made some progress on names and narrowed our list to about 5. We'll see if we actually stick with any of those 5 though!
What's Different This Time: It's rather par for the course right now compared to Grant's belly journal. Same rib discomfort and he was very active. I mentioned the Braxton Hicks earlier so hopefully I can keep those under control. I don't need any bed rest!
Next Appointment:
February 21st - 32 week appointment
This is the last 4 week stretch then on to every two weeks!

2 years
Crazy bath hair! |
Growth: I was waiting to update this post until
after Grant’s 2 year check up today. He
weighed in at 27 lbs 2 oz (40th %). His height was
34.75" (60th %). They did not measure his head circumference.
Overall, he seems to just be a lean little boy and built very much like
Matt and myself. He is still in a select few 18-24 month clothes but mainly 24 month and
2T clothes. I have even found some 3T
shirts that we need to get some use out of now because there is no way they
will fit him at or around 3 years old (I think this is just a sizing fluke
based on brand). Shoes are 6-7 and he is
still comfortable in size 4 diapers.
Teeth:
Grant’s 2 year
old molars still haven’t popped
yet. I am telling you… this boy
has been gnawing hard core on those gums for over 3 months and they still
haven’t come in. Grant also had a
dentist appointment last week. He did
great. He let the dentist look in his
mouth with the mirror and the hygienist put the chocolate toothpaste (aka
chocolate flavored tooth polish) in his mouth on her instrument. They said each time we will try to do more
and more without making it a traumatic experience.
Language/Comprehension: We have been working on shapes, colors, letters,
and numbers and we see progress daily.
He mixes pentagon and octagon up in his shapes puzzle but knows circle,
triangle, square, rectangle, and diamond.
He is getting more and more consistent with colors and very often gets
red, white, orange, and yellow correct.
He can count 1-13 rather consistently and recognizes numbers 1-5 when
asked to pick them out. If you sing “one,
two” Grant answers “buckle my shoe.”
Then we can reverse it and he does the counting part and we answer with
the other all the way to 10.
We
have been working more and more on letter recognition but there isn’t much
progress there.
He
more often than not uses your, my, me, and I in the correct context and is
using them more and more. We have also
noticed a change in Grant’s memory. He
will refer to something that happened several days ago and it takes Matt and I
a little while to catch on. We are so
used to his little brain always being in the present. For instance, he has still been referring to
his trip to the dentist, what they did and the fact that he got to pick out
a car from the “treasure chest.” He has also been talking about the "birthday snowman" he and my mom built.
Grant
can say the “Come Lord Jesus” blessing in its entirety but towards the end
he does have a tendency to mumble and follow up with a loud, proud “Amen!”
Mobility/Coordination: Grant can unzip and take his coat off and put
his hat on (usually facing the right direction). We work on dressing/undressing and there are certain pairs of pants Grant can pull down along with being able to pull down his underwear and loves trying to put on his socks. He is a pro at taking his socks and shoes off. At his birthday party, he successfully blew
out his candles. Occasionally, he will use
the proper grip on crayons/pencils. He
still primarily eats with his left hand, throws with his right and colors with
his right. I will say that he does most
things interchangeably with both hands so we will see how that continues. He can give a real thumbs up now and knows he is
two but can’t show that on his fingers yet (he holds up all 5). Grant can also roll his tongue and loves
doing so and will occasionally catch a ball.
He still won't push the pedal to make it move |
Grant-isms: Grant likes to pretend fall and say “help me please” because he needs
help up ~ He has discovered picking his nose but luckily those fingers haven’t
found their way into his mouth ~ When he gets a time out, he cries and says
“I’ll be nice” over and over ~ Answers a yes question with “Mmm Hmm” ~ He
doesn’t like to be ignored and if we have our phones out looking at something
he will say “put it away mama/daddy” ~ He is bossy, bossy, bossy right now!
Things he likes: Still loves baseball and his tee ~ singing
Christmas songs (yes, still!), music, and dancing ~ playing the guitar
Funniest moment(s) this month: If
we are playing basketball in the basement Grant will yell “miss!” when you
shoot the ball ~ If he sees a commercial with Christmas décor but no Santa he
will ask “Where’s Santa?”
Biggest change(s) this month: Unfortunately,
we had some regression this month and since being back at daycare in the New
Year Grant has occasionally been biting or attempting to bite… usually
unprovoked. Not cool!
Firsts: Sledding! With some really good snow earlier this year (which has all melted now!) we have been able to get out a couple of times to enjoy.
My mom took Grant to a local nursing home by the name of Villa Loretta. My aunt takes care of the many animals they have so it was almost like a petting zoo for Grant complete with goats, rabbits, horses, donkeys, chickens, monkeys, llamas, and others I probably forgot.

Illnesses: Grant and I were both sick this
month. Grant had a pretty bad cold and
ran a fever of 103-105 for 4 days. He
was fever free for over 24 hours then the day before he was supposed to go back
to daycare and me back to work his fever came back and spiked at 105
again. It was just a virus so there
wasn’t much we could do other than keep him comfortable with Tylenol and
cuddling.
C Diff update: I
am happy to say that Grant has still showed no signs of C Diff. It has been a busy month with outreach
though.
Grant was
featured in a Fond du Lac Reporter article and Chicago PBS story on the human
microbiome.
Here are some of the links if you haven’t had the chance to read or watch them. The PBS story is very interesting. They are hoping to find other applications for stool transplants and have some promising research on the horizon.

27 Weeks
How Far Along: 27 Weeks (Bye bye 2nd trimester hello 3rd!)
Baby's Size: Rutabaga Average size: 13.6-14.8 inches, 1.5-2.2 lbs (Another source says baby weighs just over 2 lbs and is approximately 15 inches head to toe.)
Nipples are sprouting and face is fully formed
Total Weight Gain:
Home scale: 2.4 lbs this week bringing me to 13.0 lbs total
I must be trying to make up some ground after being so sick in the first trimester and then having that cold not too long ago. I have had two BIG weeks of weight gain in a row. That can stop! Slow and steady is how I would rather gain. Maybe she has just undergone a growth spurt... that's what I will tell myself at least!
Doctor’s scale: 10 lbs at 24 week appointment on December 27th
Weight gained with Grant at this point: 20.2 lbs
Maternity Clothes: I made the bra switch (which I should have done awhile ago because I will admit I am much more comfortable with the added room). Otherwise, not much has changed with clothes.
Baby's Movement: She's a jumping bean
Food Cravings: Um... anything and everything! I have definitely had a hearty appetite lately which hasn't helped the weight situation.
Food Aversions: Nothing sticks out this week
Sleep: Great, except I find that when I need to roll from one side to the other I wake to do so because it is becoming more of an ordeal. I have also been a back sleeper for a long time and very often wake up on my back which I of course try to avoid at this point. No nightly potty breaks as of the last couple weeks but I know they will be back.
Symptoms: I don't know if it has been because Grant turned two or stress but I have been very emotional this week. I am also finding that if I am tired I am exceptionally crabby and moody. I try to keep myself in check and keep my mouth shut but struggle. I have also been nesting... but only at work so far. I have big ideas for home for our office/toy room so we'll see how motivated I am with that. We must get her room done before we take on that project!
Best Moment(s) This Week: Grant's 2nd birthday and party and spending the time with our family and friends.
What I Miss: Having a full weekend off. I have always worked every other weekend on Sundays but to build up more time off for my leave I have picked up every Sunday for basically as long as I can work them. I am hoping for 15 weeks off and how much vacation and comp time I have built up will determine how much extra I can take. It is amazing the difference working 6 days a week versus 5 days makes especially when you are tired all the time as it is and going into your 3rd trimester of pregnancy. I know the extra time off at home with the kids will be worth it though!
What I Am Looking Forward To: Snowboarding this weekend... I know, I know! I will be VERY careful and take it very easy and take lots of breaks but I desperately want to go. My snowboard pants still fit so that has to count for something right?!? I won 4 lift tickets and a 2 night hotel stay to Granite Peak so we really couldn't pass it up. Matt and I are even using it as a night away/mini babymoon.
What's Different This Time: I still think she is much more active than Grant ever was but I do have notes in his journal about him being active at this point as well. Maybe you just forget...

Grant's 2nd Birthday
A Goodnight Moon pajama party
Hard to tell in this picture but those are Goodnight Moon pajamas that Grant is wearing |
I did my best to convert our dining room into the scene of Goodnight Moon. With the purchase of some clearance fabrics and my sewing machine, I was able to make the curtains and bunny's bed which also served as our serving table for all of the food.
My fancy artistic skills included a picture of a cow jumping over the moon, with three little bears sitting on chairs nearby.
We also couldn't leave out the comb and brush and bowl full of mush.
The kids colored a scene from Goodnight Moon and a cow jumping over the moon. They also painted stars to put in their goodie bags to take home. Unfortunately because of all the illness going around right now we had a couple of children who couldn't make it so Grant and his friend Addie held down the fort painting.
Overall, it was a great time... Laid back and relaxing with some of our family and some of Grant's friends.
We opted for cupcakes again this year made by a friend of ours who does it on the side. They were delicious with handmade bunnies and cows to top them off!
Grant got some amazing gifts. It will be a long time before he needs any trucks, tractors, or construction equipment. He is a pro at tearing into wrapping paper and flew through opening everything.
Thank you to everyone for celebrating Grant's 2nd birthday with us!
I will be waiting until after Grant's two year check up on Friday to do his 24 month post.

26 Weeks
How Far Along: 26 Weeks T-minus less than 100 days... depending on when she decides to come meet us of course!
Baby's Size: Lettuce Average size: 13.6-14.8 inches, 1.5-2.2 lbs (Another source says baby weighs more about 2 lbs and is 9 inches crown to rump.)
Eyes are starting to open...
Total Weight Gain:
Home scale: 2.9 lbs this week (yikes!) bringing me to 10.6 lbs total (I have really fluctuated over the last couple of weeks!)
Doctor’s scale: 10 lbs at 24 week appointment on December 27th
Weight gained with Grant at this point: 18.4 lbs
Maternity Clothes: Still the same.. maternity pants and mixing in maternity shirts here and there. I am also starting to think it might be time to switch to maternity/nursing bras... BOO!
Baby's Movement: Still a dancing machine. It seems lately most of her movements have been down lower with the occasional high movement above my belly button and most localized to the right side.
Food Cravings: Fish... I try to limit myself to once/week but I love fish and seafood in general and could probably eat it several times a week. Saltines... plain. Weird, I know! I keep a sleeve in my desk at work. And cheddar cheese which can prove to be a bad thing with the common constipation problems in pregnancy :)
Food Aversions: Matt tried beef short ribs on the grill (a first), I tried a bite but couldn't do it. It seems if it is grilled at home I don't want anything to do with it but grilled in a restaurant I can handle.
Sleep: I have been sleeping great! I love sleep! Most nights I am asleep on the couch by 8:30 and then drag myself upstairs by 10:00 or so.
Symptoms: Sore, itchy breasts (that is why I think it is time for those maternity bras... I need more room). Fatigue and there are certain positions that are beginning to become a little uncomfortable. If I sit for too long or hunch over I get that discomfort/burning sensation below my ribs. Constipation... this has been ongoing and one of those not so glorious things that comes along with pregnancy.
Best Moment(s) This Week: Feeling better now that I have kicked the cold and able to enjoy all of baby's movements. Everytime I start to complain or think about how ready I am to meet baby girl I remind myself to enjoy every last moment because I VERY likely WON'T be doing this again.
What I Miss: Bending over is beginning to get more difficult. I find myself doing the squat and side swoop grabs instead of bending directly over. I guess it was inevitably...
What I Am Looking Forward To: Celebrating Grant's birthday tomorrow and this weekend!
What's Different This Time: I forgot to mention that at my last appointment the doctor checked my iron again and I am still on the low end. We aren't seeing any side effects other than it could be contributing to why I am still so exhausted. I have been trying to be more diligent with my additional iron supplement (again not good for constipation issues!) and getting more iron in my diet.

Christmas 2012
I will be the first to admit that as much as I was looking forward to this Christmas because of how much fun Grant was having with all of the festivities, lights, and characters that go along with Christmas, there was also a large part of me that was dreading it... The fact that I had to work both Eve and Day and all the running and the hustle and bustle. Then, we ended up with colds on top of it all. I admit to losing sight of what Christmas is all about.
I want to share a recent post from "Chase Brauda's Prayer Team" facebook page. Chase is the son of a teacher I had my senior year in high school and her recent post struck me in a very profound way and really puts things in perspective.
December 19, 2011 – my own personal date which will live in infamy. On this day last year, I woke up early for whatever reason – not a usual event for me, especially since it was my first day of Christmas vacation from school. Though Chase had a mid-January appointment with his gastroenterologist in Savannah, I felt a heavy burden that he needed blood work. With a text to a friend at Blackshear Family Practice, she told me to bring him in at 1:00.
Now imagine waking your child up on his first day of Christmas vacation telling him that we were going to get blood work “just because.” Needless to say, my son was not my biggest fan at that moment. Later that day after watching my first episode of The Walking Dead with Chase and my dad, I headed home to clean house and got the call no parent wants to get. Chase had abnormal cells in his blood and after consulting with the doctor at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, the doctor I would find out later was an oncologist, he recommended that we bring Chase immediately to the emergency room in Jacksonville.
And so it began. Ladies Home Journal recently sponsored an essay contest entitled “Tell Us About the Day that Changed Your Life.” Though I considered entering this contest, to be honest, I couldn’t decide which day to write about. Would it be December 19? Or December 20th when we were told that tests confirmed that Chase had acute myeloid leukemia? Or maybe December 26th when we were told that Chase had high risk AML and would need a bone marrow transplant. Or later when we were informed that Morgan was not only a match, but a perfect match for Chase. April 17th, the day of the transplant, when my two children touched hands through a wall of glass? Or would I write about the day that Chase signed the finish line cancer free and we walked out of the hospital? What about day 100 when we joyfully loaded up his friends in a stretch Hummer limo and went to celebrate at Dave and Busters? Or was it the awful day of August 9 when we learned Chase had relapsed? Or even worse, September 2nd when my baby boy took his last breath here on Earth.
Of course, there are many non-cancer days that are highlights in my life. The day I met my husband, the day we got married, the birth of my children, the death of my dad….. But after much reflection on this writing topic, if I had written the essay, I would have written about the day that I surrendered my life over to Jesus Christ. I was on a youth retreat with my childhood friend. The youth group leader had asked us to walk out on the beach where we were staying and write a letter in the sand to God. On this day, I asked for God’s forgiveness for my sins, acknowledged His sacrifice for me, and asked Him for His help in living the rest of my life for Him. And though I could write countless essays detailing my failings as a Christian since that day at the beach, He has never left me. Without that day at the beach, none of the other days I’ve mentioned would hold any value. Without Christ, I would not have the assurance of an eternal life free from the burdens of Earthly living. I would not KNOW that there is another date that will surpass it all……. The day that my family will one day begin our eternities together. Thank you, Jesus. YOU CHANGED MY LIFE!
It made me stop to think about what day I would write about. Would it be about something selfish and worldly or would I keep my focus on Christ just as we all should do not just during this time of the but all year long.
Jesus is the reason for the season and this is how we celebrated His birthday
A family trip to the Dells
Our time as a family just the three soon to be four of us
Family time with the Ninnemans
Family time with the Fishers
Family time with the Pippings... I admit that by this point in all the running around I did not take a single picture unfortunately. Boo for me! But as you can see we had so much fun and Grant loved every moment.

25 Weeks
How Far Along: 25 Weeks, 1 Day
Baby's Size: Cauliflower Average size: 13.6-14.8 inches, 1.5-2.2 lbs (Another source says baby weighs more than a 1.5 lbs and is 9 inches crown to rump.)
Baby knows which way is up and down now... Praying she chooses HEAD DOWN!
Total Weight Gain:
Home scale: Down 0.9 lbs this week (maybe because of the cold and lack of appetite this last week...) bringing me to 7.7 lbs total
Doctor’s scale: 10 lbs at 24 week appointment on December 27th
Weight gained with Grant at this point: 17.2 lbs
Maternity Clothes: I am beginning to find my favorites again and gravitating towards certain pants and dabbling more and more in the maternity shirts.
Baby's Movement: I am beginning to wonder if she sleeps... ever! There are some days that it feels like she is moving all day long!
Food Cravings: I still didn't have much of an appetite after being sick but there was one day when I wanted a burger from Culver's and I took care of that almost immediately! I was also craving smoked herring and saltine crackers which I enjoyed this week as well. It reminded me of floating down the river with a fishing pole in hand. It was always a staple on the boat growing up.
Food Aversions: None to speak of this week...
Sleep: More please! It has been a rough week between me being sick and Grant being sick. Sleep has been a precious commodity around our house and I want more!
Symptoms: Braxton Hicks have continued and increased in number. Reflux has been down this week but maybe that is because I have been too busy coughing to notice. My hip has also been feeling pretty good this week.. knock on wood.
Best Moment(s) This Week: Even though Grant and I were both sick it was so nice having the time off of work and getting to spend some quality one on one with him.
What I Miss: Not being exhausted. I know it has been the ongoing complaint but it has been worse because of the cold and Grant being sick. I had high hopes for being so productive in the 2nd trimester because I know I will be even more exhausted in the fast approaching 3rd.
What I Am Looking Forward To: The barely touched nursery is still nagging away at me... daily! We have also made a little headway in the name department but the list is still way too long for my liking and we just can't seem to agree.
What's Different This Time: I have the sense of urgency to get things done but I definitely don't have the motivation. I did sort through some of Grant's earlier clothes and pick out some for baby girl to wear in the beginning. Now, I want to wash them and get them put away but... I need a complete nursery to do so.
