I’m
not exactly sure where the time goes but I do know it goes entirely too fast
and hence another late post. After this
month I will move to doing seasonal posts like I have with Grant… hopefully on
time.
This
month we celebrated Amelia’s 2nd birthday. It was honestly bittersweet and somewhat
emotional for me. I know she is our last
baby and the baby phase now seems like a distant memory. She is a full blow toddler who is dabbling in
the terrible two’s.
Growth:
Official
stats from her 2 year check up:
Weight: 26 lbs 1 oz (40th Percentile)
Height:
34” (60th Percentile)
Head
Circumference: 48 cm (75th
Percentile)
Amelia
is wearing some 24 month and 2T items but we are branching into 3T shirts. Diapers are still size 4 and shoes are size
5-6. Enter clothing rant here:
I’ve long been disappointed in the direction clothing designers seem to
be going with girl’s clothing. It’s like
we’re setting our girls up to live up to the often skanky personas we see in
magazines, media, and internet. I’ve
decided this even happens to a degree with smaller children’s clothing. Amelia is on the tall side for her age but
there is no reason her 2T shirts should be short belly shirts already. I have to put her in 3T shirts so they are
long enough in the midriff but then roll up the sleeves because the sleeves are
too long.
Mobility/Coordination: Amelia loves playing “Ring Around the Rosie” and
will pull your hand and say “round round.”
She enjoys puzzles, running, swinging and trying to climb up the ladder
on our swing set.
Language/Communication: Amelia is a little chatter box and talks
constantly. More and more words are
recognizable and one of my favorites is how she says TV = “we we” and says “bless
you” when someone sneezes.
Personality/Amelia-isms: She is still our silly and usually happy little
girl. She does the silly tongue curl
thing that I can do, holds milk in her cheeks like a chipmunk and loves Frozen characters. Anytime she sees any Frozen stuff she sings
let it go which comes out like “da doe.”
Sleep: Amelia is still doing
very well in her big bed. We lay down,
read a story, kiss her good night and on most nights she is asleep within 10
minutes. In the morning, she has been
waking up around 6:00 and will play quietly in her room (aka pull everything
off her dresser she can reach) until we go in there and catch her in the act.
Eating: This month we opted to
try lactose free milk for Amelia. She
previously had 3-4 poops/day that were on the thin side and very sour
smelling. Thinking she is having a hard
time digesting we made the switch. It
has made a huge difference. Now she only
poops 1-2 times/day and they are normal consistency and smell. Overall, she still eats when she feels like
it and not a bite more.
Teeth: Amelia’s lower right 2 year old molar made its
initial appearance this month with the others close to follow I think.
Illnesses/Owies: The most significant owie of consequence this
month involved the partial dislocation of Amelia’s elbow also referred to as
nursemaid's elbow.
It was a normal morning as I was getting the
kids settled in at daycare. I dropped
Grant off at the classroom and took Amelia with me to drop some other things
off. I set her down and she said
“owie.” I tried to find her owie but had
no luck localizing where pain could be coming from. I took her to her classroom and set her down
again and she was whimpering and clinging to me and didn’t want me to leave
which isn’t normal. We again tried
asking her about owies and what was wrong and couldn’t pinpoint anything. I told the teacher that she seemed off and to
call me if it didn’t change because I would get her into the doctor. I got a call about an hour later saying Amelia
was acting very lethargic and was a limp noodle and wouldn’t use her arm. I made a doctor’s appointment and said I was
coming.
When
I arrived at daycare, Amelia didn’t even reach out to me to come to me and was
still a limp noodle in the teacher’s arm.
At the doctor’s office, I explained what was going on and she had her
suspicions about the dislocation. She
did a maneuver where she held her elbow and wrist and did an upward turning
motion to which the doctor said she felt the pop and Amelia responded with the
appropriate blood curdling, gasping cry.
The doctor warned that Amelia could be susceptible to this happening
again in the future since it seemed to “come out so easily.”
Amelia never seemed to have any soreness or continued pain and I knew she was going to be just fine when she popped her thumb in her mouth and started sucking it again because she could bend her elbow.
I
of course was wondering how or when it could have happened. The only thing I can recall that happened was
when we were walking in daycare that morning.
I was holding Grant’s and Amelia’s hands when Amelia decided she didn’t
want to walk anymore and collapsed limp noodle on the floor. I reached down, grabbed her arm, scooped her
up and we all kept walking. I suspect in
the moment, even with very little force it caused the dislocation. She never cried out in pain and never
indicated any discomfort other than the “owie” about 1 minute later. The most surprising thing to me was her
response to the pain which indicates just how tough she is. Instead of crying inconsolably, she pretty
much shut down and became lethargic and stoic.
Also
this month I’m not sure what it is about my car but Amelia had a puking
incident in it again. We got home and
she threw up two more times within an hour and that was it. No fever and no other symptoms.
With
warmer weather also comes the typical sidewalk road rash. Amelia had her first of the season and it
just so happened that is was because she decided to get off Grant’s gator while
it was in motion on the driveway.
Brother/Sister
Moment(s): Grant and Amelia still
tend to get along pretty well. They play
and entertain each other until one or the other decides they have had enough.
Firsts/Adventures: This month marked
turning Amelia’s car seat around to face forward which she thinks is absolutely
awesome. She also had her 2nd
dentist appointment. This time she sat
in the chair alone for a little while but wouldn’t allow them to do a full exam
and cleaning.
We also celebrated Easter complete with coloring Easter eggs and an Easter egg hunt.
Likes: flushing the toilet ~ owls ~ blowing bubbles ~
Doc McStuffins ~ Frozen characters ~ giving hugs and kisses ~ bedtime secret
hand shake (thumbs up, knuckles and blow them up and then a high five)
Dislikes: chocolate milk?!? (weird, I know but she
takes a sip and does an ick face and shakes her head now) ~ bananas ~ wearing
socks
Toddler Moment(s): I’d say our toddler moments are still about the
same. She is independent and stubborn at
times (but so is her mother). She has
had fewer biting incidents this month thankfully and it won’t be long before
she begins her transition into the 2 year old room at daycare.
Potty Training:
We put
Amelia on the potty when she asks which is usually because she wants to flush
the toilet or wipe or she sees one of us use it. Normally, she doesn’t go so I don’t think we
will be in undies anytime soon unfortunately.
