~Christmas 2013~

To say we feel blessed this Christmas would truly be an understatement.  There has never been a point in our lives that we have ever felt the joy and contentment that we feel now.  Our little family is complete and our children are happy and healthy.  Life is far from perfect.  We have our daily struggles and some days feel like a never ending battle.  However, it is this time of year that makes us slow down and enjoy each moment.

The week of Christmas kicked off with our 2nd annual trip to the Wisconsin Dells with Matt’s immediate family.  There are now 5 grandchildren and every year gets more and more fun.  The kids (big and small) splashed in the water park and enjoyed some R&R.

Hanging out by her favorite cooler for the weekend

8 months ~Amelia~

Pictures were nearly impossible this month... someone doesn't sit still anymore

Growth
Weight:  Approximately 18.5 lbs

Height:  Approximately 28”

All of Amelia’s 6-9 months items have been packed away.  She is primarily wearing 9, 9-12 and 12 month items.  She wears size 3 diapers and size 3 shoes (occasionally).

Get this sticker off my face mom!
Mobility/Coordination:  Two days after Amelia turned 7 months she crawled for the first time (Thanksgiving Day).  For about a week, it was a little sporadic here and there but now she is a pro and crawling non-stop.  When she crawls, she leaves her left knee on the ground and puts her right foot underneath herself and pushes with her foot (“spider monkey”).  Not sure if that is a sign of early walking to come or not.

There have been numerous instances where she had both feet underneath herself and both hands on the ground like she was doing the downward facing dog yoga pose.  We are occasionally seeing her crawl with both knees on the ground so I am not sure with method she is going to settle into yet.  She also likes to sit up on her knees and doesn’t need anything to balance herself.  She is starting to walk along furniture.  Yikes!  The other day she was playing at Grant’s train table and held on to it and walked from one end to the other to get a toy she wanted.  She’s mastered the pincher grasp and can easily snag cheerios, yogurt bites, and other bits of food and pretty accurately get them into her mouth.
We have retired the exersaucer for the johnny jumper and jumperoo.  She loves jumping and really gets moving in those things!
Language/Communication:  We have seen Amelia’s communication grow by leaps and bounds since her tubes (see below).  Literally, the day of the surgery she was already babbling more.  We have heard ba, mmm, ma, ga, and la sounds.  She is even putting together ah ba and repeats it over and over.  When she is babbling she moves her tongue constantly like she knows it is involved in the whole talking process but she doesn’t quite know how yet.
Personality/Amelia-isms:  Amelia is so funny and very happy still.  If you smile at her, she lights up and smiles back.  If you wave, she waves back.  If you say “yay,” she claps.    She adores her daddy and every morning when she nurses she yanks herself off the breast to smile up at Matt and give him a big wave and smile goodbye.  We have noticed Amelia does not like being told no or redirected now that she is into everything.  She cries and gets so mad.  I would say just a smidge independent and strong willed… like her momma maybe.

Sleep:  Nothing new to report here.  She is still napping 2-3 times per day.  She usually catches a cat nap on the way to daycare nearly every morning and a cat nap on the way home some afternoons.  Otherwise, she takes two longer naps mid-morning and early afternoon.  Night time is still the same with a solid 10-11 hours.

Feeding:  Amelia is still nursing or taking a bottle 4-5 times per day and drinks 7-9 oz.  She is eating 3 “meals” a day now.  If she gets fussy while eating solids, it’s usually because she is thirsty or she wants to feed herself if you are trying to feed her something like yogurt or cottage cheese from a spoon.

I am not really keeping track of new foods anymore.  She eats what we eat 95% of the time with maybe a couple of things picked out of the dish.  She did have blueberries for the first time about 2 weeks ago and ended up throwing up at daycare afterwards but there were no blueberries in the puke.  We weren’t sure if she was getting a bug but it only happened once.  The cheese she ate with the blueberries was in the vomit but not the berries… weird.  I am going to try them again at home this week when I am off work to see if it was a fluke or if they really upset her tummy.    We also had stir fry that had been cooked in peanut oil and jambalaya that had shrimp in it so if she was severely allergic to either one of those I am pretty sure we would have seen allergy symptoms pop up after consumption but we did not.

Nursing/pumping has really fallen off the cliff in the last month.  If I could exclusively nurse her, we would still be going strong with no end in sight.  It is the pumping that kills me and wears me out.  Work has been extremely busy the last month or so and I had to cut back on my pumping sessions to keep up at work.  So right now Amelia is still about 80% breastfed/20% formula fed.  Those numbers will probably change quite a bit in the next month but I do still have about one month of frozen breastmilk left in the freezer stash.

Regardless of what happens over the next month, I know I have a bond with both of my children that no other person will ever share with them and I have shared the most natural, healthiest option for at least some portion of the recommended first year of their lives.  I should be proud and I shouldn’t be disappointed in myself that I didn’t make it longer.  That doesn’t change the fact that I am.  It’s my nature and I know I am too hard on myself a lot of the times.  If anyone has ever said to a new mother breastfeeding is not a lot of work (especially for a working/pumping mom) they are lying.  However, it is one of the most fulfilling types of work I have done as a mother to date… Not to mention I figured we’ve saved over $2500 for the baby formula we haven’t had to buy.  It’s a bittersweet moment coming to a close but I fully anticipate the pump being packed up and the nursing bras being stashed away within the next month or two.  Although I will say wholeheartedly I will not miss either of those things!

Teeth:  No new teeth this month.  Her two from last month are completely through and so adorable when she gives a big smile.  We’ll see which ones make and appearance next.  It looks like there may be a couple more on bottom that are close.

Illnesses:  Right after last month’s post we headed back to the pediatrician for an ear re-check (Monday).  I already had a gut feeling that they were still infected so I had also scheduled an ENT appointment for 2 days later.  Well low and behold, the pediatrician confirmed Amelia still had a double ear infection.  The left was still worse than the right (“moderate to severe”) with puss behind the ear drum and the right was “mild” with lots of fluid and a bulging ear drum).
Wednesday we headed to our ENT appointment and confirmed what we already knew.  Amelia was hearing essentially nothing.  Her tympanogram showed no movement in either of her ear drums.  At this point, we didn’t hesitate to schedule an appointment to get tubes.  We were scheduled for that Friday.  It went very smoothly and never really phased her.  She fussed a little in recovery, nursed and then we went home and she napped.  Upon waking, she was fine and you would’ve never known anything happened except for the goop that continued to drain from her ears over the next four days.  The doctor said he sucked tons of fluid out of there that was very thick like glue.
As mentioned above, we have already seen a drastic improvement in her sounds and communication.  Whether it will really help keep ear infections away is yet to be determined but at least we know she is hearing properly.
Brother/Sister Moment(s):  There was one afternoon when I was in the kitchen and Amelia was in her high chair in the dining room and Grant said “I’m going to give Amelia her medicine.”  I asked where he was going to get the medicine and he told me “My kitchen.”  I didn’t think much of it because he has play food and stuff so I assumed he would grab some of it and pretend it was medicine.  Well, I turned around to see Amelia gnawing on one of the dog bones with a big smile on her face.  Ha!  Needless to say I got a good laugh from it and snatched it out of her hands pretty quickly.
Brother/sister bath time is getting much easier.  Most times Amelia is still in her infant tub inside the big tub (she is way too antsy and curious to be in the big tub yet) but if necessary we can give them a bath together to save time.
Firsts:  Tube surgery ~ Wisconsin Dells Fisher family Christmas trip (post coming soon)
Likes:  clapping ~ crawling ~ beans ~ jumper/jumperoo ~ pointing with her index finger ~ new activity table ~ musical, light up toys ~ pancakes

Dislikes:  being told no ~ laying still ~ being hungry or tired

7 Months ~Amelia~

Growth:
Weight: 17 lbs (Doctor’s measurement at a sick visit… that’s up over 1 lb since her 6 month checkup)

No official head circumference or height this month.  I would guess she has probably grown another ½” or so.  I am pretty sure she hit a growth spurt (as can be seen by her weight).  There were 3 days at daycare she drank her normal two-7 oz bottles, an additional two ounces, and they had to give you water to hold you over (this was before we started solids at lunch there).
Clothing is still about the same… almost all 6 month clothing has been retired and Amelia is mainly wearing 6-9, 9, and 6-12 month items and occasionally 12 month. She is still in size 3 diapers and if she ever wore shoes she would be wearing a size 2.

Mobility/Coordination:  This little girl amazes us!  She pulls herself up from a sitting position at barely over 6 months old.  It’s not a fluke because she has proceeded to do it on number occasions as long as the object she is pulling up on isn’t too tall and she can get a grip on it.  She will even roll across the room to get to an object she can pull up on.  Needless to say her crib has been lowered to the lowest position already and we’ve had to do some additional baby proofing… or re-baby proofing since we have gotten lax on it now that Grant has gotten older.  I should also mention that just because she can pull herself up doesn’t mean she is very steady on those wobbly legs!  I see a lot of bumped heads in our future and she even had her 1st one at daycare today!

Amelia can go from sitting to kneeling on all fours position.  We are even getting a little rocking back and forth.  She can also go from laying to sitting.  It’s been a busy month!

The raking motions are beginning to fade and we are seeing more of the pincher grasp with puffs and feeding.
Language/Communication:  This is probably our only area of slight concern.  Amelia will say “hey/hi” as clear as day along with a cute wave but we have yet to hear any other real consonant sounds (ba, ma, da, etc.).  We are still hearing vowel sounds occasionally but she prefers squealing.  I think it has much to do with the fact that she has had an ear infection in at least one ear for 6 weeks and both ears for 4 of those weeks.  More on that in the “illness” section.  She laughs often and loves when you talk to her.

Personality/Amelia-isms:  Amelia still likes to get our attention by squealing and waving and now reaching out to be picked up.  In spite of the ear infections, she has been really happy on most days.  If Matt or anyone else is holding her and she sees or hears me, she will fuss because she wants me.  Overall, this little girl will express how she feels rarely by crying but using other forms of communication.  This is much different than Grant who was always a bit more quiet and reserved.

Sleep:  Amelia is down to 2-3 naps a day.  The early morning usually consists of a short cat nap and then two longer naps (1-3 hours) in the late morning and early afternoon.  Night time is still the same with a solid 10-11 hours.

Feeding:  Amelia nurses/drinks 4-5 times per day and drinks 7-9 oz from a bottle.  Nursing is still holding up pretty well and she seems satisfied after.  Pumping is going downhill fast it though L  I now only get about 8-9 oz max in a day but she drinks about 14-16.  Obviously, the math doesn’t work out but my freezer stash should still hold out for another 1-2 months without supplementing.  I will start supplementing some before it would get dangerously low though.  We’ll take it one day at a time.  I’ve been trying not to put too much pressure on myself or be too bummed out but I am very sad since I know she is our last.  (Yes, it is official… she is the last lil’ Fish.  Matt had the big V last weekend)  I was really hoping to exclusively breastfeed her until at least a year but it’s looking like that just isn’t in the cards and as much as it saddens me I am slowly coming to terms with it.

Amelia is eating solids twice a day and acts like a pro when it is something she wants to eat or is in the mood.  She rarely gags because she is accustom to the texture and manipulating and chewing the food already.   I would say we follow a modified baby led weaning system as one friend put it.  She has never had purees, loves texture and lumps in her food and does pretty well getting some pieces to her mouth.  The biggest deviation we have made from true “baby led weaning” is we do spoon feed her small pieces that we know she can handle.  I will be the first to admit we haven’t exactly followed the rules when it comes to solids.  Usually, we only introduce one food at a time but that isn’t always the case.  I’ve waited on things like berries but haven’t exactly followed the age recommendations for solids.  Overall, it has been sooo much easier than it was with Grant!

New foods this month: coconut milk lentils with risotto ~ chicken and rice ~ peas ~ sweet potato ~ butternut squash ~ black beans and others I am sure I didn’t remember

Teeth:  Well, Amelia officially has two teeth.  Both of her lower central incisors made an appearance on the same day!

Illnesses:  Where to begin this month?  To date, Amelia has yet to run any fever other than the one day last month before she even had an ear infection or bronchitis.  Well, last month’s post ended with us having just been prescribed azithromycin for bronchitis and a double ear infection.  The antibiotic cleared her bronchitis with in a couple of days.  With little hope for how the ears were going to look (she had been digging and tugging still), we went back to the doctor for a check of the ears at 2 weeks and she still had an ear infection in both ears.  Don’t forget she popped TWO teeth during all of this as well which can probably account for some of our illness woes.

The photo session wouldn't be complete this month without a picture of her digging in her ears
Overall, she was still mostly happy, eating well, no runny nose, and no fever so we opted not to start another antibiotic (The AAP has changed their stance on treatment of ear infections based on the evidence of growing antibiotic resistance.  Although I will say our pediatrician was not exactly supportive of our decision.).  Over the next two weeks, we used natural remedies such as good ol’ peroxide, breastmilk (yes breastmilk aka liquid gold!), and garlic oil in the ears.  We continued with some of the various essential oils and massaged the ears daily.  She still seemed to be focusing and tugging on her ears and would have a fussy day here and there but overall she was ok except for the fact that a cough reappeared towards the end of week 2.

We went back to the doctor for her scheduled two week recheck and low and behold one ear (the right) cleared on its own but the left was still pretty badly infected and the bronchitis was back.  Needless to say, we opted to try an antibiotic again (cefprozil this time) and go back this Monday for another re-check.  If the ears aren’t clear this time, we are very likely headed to the ENT because it will be fairly evident that she has a resistant ear infection that we refuse to continue to throw pointless antibiotics at.  I am not sold on the prospect of tubes but our biggest concern at this point is her hearing so we’d at least like to get that screened.

Firsts:  We had her ears pierced this month along with cousin Vada. Amelia only cried for a little bit and handled it like a champ.

Likes:  waving ~ pulling up ~ rolling ~ yogurt bites ~ mum-mums ~ peek a boo ~ Mom, Dad, and Grant ~ drinking from a cup ~ blowing raspberries ~

Dislikes:  Wearing mittens (because she can’t suck her thumb) ~ wearing a hat (she pulls most of them off) ~ plain yogurt ~ applesauce ~

6 Months ~Amelia~

I am not sure why it surprises me… we’ve seen it with Grant but time absolutely flies by.  Amelia is celebrating her half birthday and we are having a blast with our little family.  It’s often very busy but we try to enjoy each and every day as the kids get older.  I wish I could freeze time and bottle them up because we are having so much fun right now!

Growth:
Weight:  15 lbs 12 oz (42nd percentile)
Height:  27 1/4" (93rd percentile)
Head Circumference:  42.5 cm (58th percentile)

As you can see... this little girl is longggg and lean :)

Most 6 month clothing has been retired and Amelia is mainly wearing 6-9 and 9 month items.  She is still in size 3 diapers and if she ever wore shoes she would be wearing a size 2.

Mobility/Coordination:  Amelia can now sit completely unsupported.  We still keep the boppy close by for the occasional topple but she does very well balancing.  She loves standing and will stiffen her body if you try to get her to sit.  She can even stand at the table and balance herself for quite some time.  Hand eye coordination has continued to improve and she is reaching for objects very accurately with one hand and switching objects between hands.  While on her tummy, she fully extends her arms and has even gotten up on to her knees at least once.  She doesn’t have the pincher grasp yet but there are a lot of raking motions for objects.

Language/Communication:  Amelia is still usually quiet but has definitely learned how to get our attention.  She will whine or fuss when she wants a change of scenery or gets bored.  Her language sounds haven’t changed much and she still leans towards her ooh and aah vowel sounds.

Personality/Amelia-isms:  Amelia has started to show some signs of separation anxiety especially when she is around people she doesn’t know.  If I walk out of the room, she will fuss or if I walk into a room and don’t go to her she fusses because she wants me.  Also, if a stranger is trying to talk to her sometimes she’ll wind up and poke out her bottom lip then start crying.  She has become a bit more of a cuddle bug this month which I love.  One of my favorite things is when she spots you across the room and you say hi to her she lets out this adorable giggle and lights up with the biggest smile.

Sleep:  Amelia is still on the same sleep schedule.  She likes her early morning and late afternoon catnaps with at least 1-2 longer naps in the middle.  There have been a couple nights she has woken up coughing but goes right back to sleep.  She also still prefers to sleep on her side or tummy.

Feeding:  Amelia eats 4-5 times per day and stretches some feedings as much as 4+ hours.  When taking a bottle, she normally drinks about 7-8 oz or nurses for 15-20 minutes.

I am very excited we made it 6 months exclusively breastfeeding without really batting an eye.  I have noticed a slight dip in my supply (I get 12-16 oz at work pumping 3 times a day but Amelia is sometimes eating 16 oz at daycare so some days I don’t break even).  I started taking fenugreek occasionally and drinking a “mother’s milk” tea.  My dip in supply could also be because of some other womanly changes that occurred this month (boo!).

We began to dabble with solids occasionally and so far Amelia has had broccoli, acorn squash, avocado, apples, and bananas.  She seemed to like them all but it was more licking and squeezing and making a mess than actually being able to pick up pieces and put them in her mouth (the baby led weaning method).  I have used my finger as a spoon occasionally and helped her get a little more in her mouth.  Her tongue thrust still pretty strong and she gags on the some of the bites.  Again, we are still taking it slowly.  She’ll get the hang of it with time.

Illnesses:  Amelia has still had a cold/cough/runny nose.  I had been continuing to use some various oils (thieves, melaleuca, and frankincense) to help ward off infection.  However, we took another trip to the doctor about 2 weeks ago because she was coughing up green phlegm occasionally and we were worried about some type of infection settling in.  Her ears were still infection free and everything looked fine.  The doctor and I both agreed that if she wasn’t running a fever we weren’t going to do an antibiotic yet.

Well low and behold, a week later she popped up with a low grade fever (101).  We made a call to the doctor and she said if she still had a fever after 72 hours we would definitely start an antibiotic (we of course were hesitant to start one immediately because of Grant’s C Diff and the doctor’s suggested use of azithromycin… the exact antibiotic that caused Grant’s problems).  I used a little peppermint essential oil on her and she woke up the next morning fever free with no return of the fever.  We have been continuing to monitor and keep an eye on her but we saw some change towards the beginning of this week when her eyes started getting goopy and running.

We suspected a sinus infection or something along thsoe lines.  I took her in Friday for a sick visit/6 month physical and we found out after 6 weeks of battling this junk she has a double ear infection and bronchitis.  Honestly, she has been the same happy girl she always is.  She's been sleeping well and eating well except for this past Thursday.  We would've never known she had a double ear infection.  We bit the bullet and put her on an antibiotic in hopes of kicking this junk once and for all.  She is on probiotics and we are keeping a close eye

Teeth:  Still no teeth… Grant officially beat her on the tooth front.  His first tooth popped through at just over 5 months.  She still obviously loves chewing and is showing signs of teething but who knows when those first teeth will actually pop through.

Firsts:  Diaper rash (didn’t start until she had her first nibbles of solids) now each time we try something new it flares up and is gone within a day thanks to coconut oil.  It makes me nervous for when we really get going with solid though if she is already having issues.

Likes:  Sucking bottom lip ~ cold teething rings ~ snuggling with a blanket when tired ~ blowing raspberries ~ sucking her thumb ~ sitting in her high chair at the dinner table with us

Dislikes:  Being left alone when she wants to be part of the fun ~ some strangers
